A blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the eyelids by removing excess eyelid skin, muscle and fat. This surgery can be performed on both the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids, or both at the same time. Not only can the appearance of the eyelids improve after surgery, but the functional problems related to vision that some patient’s experience due to droopy eyelids can also be improved.
Droopy upper lids can be a result of relaxation of the forehead skin and eyebrow. If the upper eyelid/eyebrow droops causing vision restriction, then a brow lift may be an appropriate surgical option as well. DO OTHER PROCEDURES ACHIEVE THE SAME RESULTS AS EYELID SURGERY?
No, eyelid surgery is the only treatment option to firm lower eyelids, remove excess skin from upper eyelids, and eliminate bags under the eyes. However, there are treatment options that can improve on the already excellent benefits of eyelid surgery. Our patients from Dayton and Columbus, Ohio many times choose mild chemical peels to help further tighten lower eyelid skin. AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR EYELID SURGERY?
To be a candidate for eyelid surgery, it is important that you do not have other significant medical problems, eye problems, or high blood pressure. You also must not be taking blood thinners. Eyelid surgery is often the perfect solution for patients who have a tired look to the eyes, bags under the eyes, puffiness around the eyes, loose skin under the eyes, and/or extra or loose upper eyelid skin. This 58 year old woman from South Shore, Kentucky came to The Columbus Institute of Plastic Surgery for a Lower Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery). As you can see, she had quite a bit of puffiness and “bags” under the eyes. Feeling like thismade her look tired, she wanted that area to be more smooth and refreshed looking. Dr. Bivik Shah performed the surgery creating an incision under the lower lashes that once healed, is always hard to notice. Within about a year to a year and a half, the scar will look its absolute best. The after photo here was taken 4 months after surgery.
